Dental Implant

What is dental implant?

We all know it is the best to retain our natural teeth. However, it is not always possible due to various reasons.

If you unfortunately suffer from missing teeth, dental implant is perhaps the closest replacement to restore your smile, function and speech. It has gained increasing popularity in recent years due to high success rate and life changing clinical outcomes.

To put it simply, implant is a titanium screw that replaces the root portion of the tooth. It serves as a strong foundation for fixed or removable prosthesis such as crown, bridge and overdenture.

How do dental implants work?

Implant crown

Following careful planning, our dentists will insert the titanium implant fixture into the jaw bone accurately. Thanks to the unique biocompatibility of titanium and advance surface treatment, the fixture will then fused to jawbone after 3-4 months. This process is called osseointegration. According to various studies, the success rate of modern implant is up to 98%.

Next, we are ready to restore the implant with fixed or removable prosthesis. A metal abutment will be precisely fit to the implant fixture to support a crown, bridge or overdenture.

The cost of implant depends on many factors such as the material used and additional procedure required, such as bone grafting. It is more important to get the right treatment because implant can last long if done properly. In the long run, they may save you money.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

Most patients equate the pain level of implant procedure to tooth extraction. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Teeth and surrounding gum are numbed, therefore you can expect not to feel any pain during the implant insertion. However, you may experience slight discomfort in the first few days if bone grafting procedure is involved.
