Incorrect Myofunctional Habits

Experts believe that other than tooth size – arch length discrepancy (eg. big teeth in small jaws) and hereditary factors (genetics), soft tissue factor also play a significant role in development of crooked teeth. For example :

  • Mouth breathing
  • Tongue thrust
  • Reverse swallowing
  • Thumb sucking

How it works?

Myobrace is a removable appliance made from soft medical grade silicone and designed for patient comfort. It comes with selection of sizes and different types of design. Thus, dentist will diagnose the case after collecting all the necessary information (photo, X-rays, teeth models) and decide which is the best appliance to start with.

Once received, patient is required to wear the Myobrace appliance for 1 hour while awake and during sleep at night. Besides, dentist will give instructions to do a series of myofunctional exercise to help to correct the habits.

Best age to start

If bad myofunctional habits are discovered at young age, it is best to start the treatment as soon as possible. The optimum time to start is when the patient is still growing, around the ages of 6- 10. However, Myobrace can be still effective even if after these ages. But the habits might become harder to correct.

Retention

Unlike braces, no retainer is required after Myobraces. Once myofunctional habits are corrected and teeth aligned, the result is likely to be stable and improve overall health.
